On Friday, September 1, 1939, the North Star, was at Bonne Bay, Newfoundland, in the middle of her final cruise of the summer from New York to Montreal. The New Northland, on her sixth cruise of the season, was in the “Kingdom of the Saguenay.” Both are places of great beauty. Passengers looked forward to a calm and peaceful day, but the news from Europe was anything but. Germany had just invaded Poland.
