Families @ War--2014 Edition

There were many forms of technology during World War II. Many, but not all, of these were new developments, never used in previous wars. The types of communication during World War II included: Propaganda, Newspapers/Magazines, Radio, Airplanes, Telegraph, Telephones, Mail, Animals, and Cryptology. Each one specializing is specific situations allowing Americans to be more connected with one another than ever before.

Propaganda 

There were many forms of propaganda used. Movies, commercials, and posters were the most popular. They all had the same general message though, which was to do whatever you could to help win the war. Whether it was women helping in the workforce while their husbands are away fighting the war or Americans remaining loyal to their country and not talking to possible enemies, which is where one of the slogans “Loose lips might sink ships” comes from. Before the war, HMCS Prince Henry had been the Clarke Steamship Company’s 6,893-ton cruise ship t.s.s. North Star (above), cruising from Montreal, New York and Miami. After conversion from an armed merchant cruiser, she recommissioned as a Landing Ship (Infantry) at Vancouver on January 6, 1944, and stopped in Bermuda en route to the Clyde to pick up school children returning to Britain. Her commanding officer wartime, Capt Val Godfrey RCN, had featured in the film “Commandos Strike at Dawn,” released by Columbia Pictures in January 1943.

On arrival, the Prince Henry (above) underwent final modifications at John Brown & Company at Clydebank and prepared to take part in the D-Day landings at Normandy. She proceeded to Southampton, where on June 2 at Berth 37 she embarked the 528th Flotilla landing craft, and 227 of the Canadian Scottish Regiment of Victoria, plus 99 other troops before going to anchor in the…

Histoire

Le 15 novembre 1921 voit le jour le South African Naval Service, un corps naval destiné à l’Afrique du Sud pour des missions que nous qualifierons aujourd’hui de paramilitaires. Ce n’est pas la première fois que l’Afrique du Sud voit la création d’une «marine».

En effet en 1885 à été créé le Natal Naval Volunteers suivit vingt ans plus tard du Cape Naval Volunteers. Ces deux entités fusionnent le 1er juillet 1913 pour donner naissance à la South African Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve [RNVR (SA)].

Durant le premier conflit, 412 sud-africains participent au premier conflit mondial, 164 au sein de la Royal Navy et 248 sur la base navale de Simonstown, une base stratégique pour les alliés.

A tribute to some women and men who served in armed conflicts

Private Charles Philip Taylor served in the Royal Marines Light Infantry during World War One and with the Royal Marine Police after the war. He is entitled to the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal, the Victory Medal, the Royal Navy Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, the Defence Medal and the 1939-45 War Medal

He was born in Swanwick, near Southampton, Hampshire on October 4th, 1892.

He enlisted into the Royal Marines on June 15th, 1909. His trade was farm labourer
Height: 5’ 6”          Eyes: Brown           Religion: Church of England

He passed his swim test on April 18th, 1910.

He was attached to the Portsmouth Division on November 10th and embarked on the H.M.S. Crescent (cruise) on April 5th, 1911 and served on that ship until September 15th.

He served on the H.M.S. Cambrian (cruiser) from December 11th 1912 to January 14th 1914.

Growing up in the small BC mining town of Kaslo, BC, John Hamilton Stubbs had ambitions to be a sailor, and became a naval cadet at age ten. When his father, an electrical engineer, moved the family to Victoria, Stubbs was that much closer to the sea and to achieving his dream of a seagoing life.

When he applied to join the Royal Canadian Navy in 1930, the examining board concluded that Stubbs would make “a very good naval officer”. It was an assessment the quietly impressive Stubbs would more than live up.

Stubbs did his early training with the Royal Navy in Britain. When he returned to the RCN in the fall of 1935, he was appointed navigator of the destroyer…

 Osoyoos is located in the middle of the Southern

Okanagan wine country, whose fine wines match any

 wines from anywhere, from France to California.

 

Translated from local Inkaneep native dialect, Osoyoos

 means, where the water narrows, or sand bar across,

 an apt description for the way this town spans a narrow

 part of Osoyoos Lake in the Southern Okanagan.

 

Originally named “Soo-Yoos”, an O is believed to have

 been added to lend a more dignified sound to the name.

 

 Here, the ancestors of the Okanagan Salish Indians

 trapped the salmon swimming up the Okanagan River.
