Big Blue Circus

A few months ago I said to myself, “Self, you should really update your blog.” And I didn’t because I doubt anyone reads this thing. Does that matter, though?

I’ve been busy. I’ve been really busy doing really cool things. Remember last fall when I was hired by a library outside of Concord to do their programming and help at the circulation desk? That didn’t even last nine months. But only because I was asked to be their new director in April.

This, I believed, was a horrible idea. Mainly because while I know had the skills, the knowledge, and the support of the board of trustees and the townspeople, I had no self-confidence. But I’m in my 40s now and it’s about time to start saying yes to things. So I said yes. It turns out I’m actually really good at this job. So, self-confidence, schmelf-confidence.

52 States in 8 Months

My most important reason for going to El Paso was crossing the Rio Grande, and therefore going to the United Mexican States, or simply Mexico. In fact, just next to El Paso there is the City of Juarez in the state of Chihuahua, or in Spanish Ciudad Juárez. It can easily be confused with Ciudad Benito Juárez, another Mexican city which also got its name from Benito Juárez, a former president of Mexico.

On the pictures above you can see that there are quite some lines at the border, but that’s of course only for the direction into the US. I did not go through any border check at all when I entered Mexico, so I don’t understand how they can complain about weapons from the US being carried over… (btw: something between 17% and 90% of all weapons seized in that area come…

A Landing a Day

First timer?  In this formerly once-a-day blog (and now pretty much a once-every-four-or-five days blog), I use an app that provides a random latitude and longitude that puts me somewhere in the continental United States (the lower 48).  I call this “landing.”

I keep track of the watersheds I land in, as well as the town or towns I land near.  I do some internet research to hopefully find something of interest about my landing location.

I returned to Michigan last week after five beautiful and relaxing days in Naples, Fla. It was a fun family vacation with my dad and sister. These are the things that I already miss …

1. Warm weather and sunshine

High daytime temperatures in the 80s and evenings cool enough to don a cardigan — what a perfect transition to summer. Oh, wait. I’m back in winter weather now. We had sunshine for swimming and sunbathing by the pool and at the beach. At night, it was comfortable to dine al fresco or sail the open water wearing a light jacket or sweater.

Sunshine and temperatures in the 70s and 80s made sunbathing by the Bellasera Hotel’s pool irresistible.

Embrace yourself, embrace the world

Key West is the island and the city at the southwesternmost end of the roadway through the Florida Keys.

Key West is a beautiful destination, famous for water sports, lively nightlife, beaches and historic sites.

My boyfriend and I visited this city with an organized bus tour, as a day trip from Miami Beach where we were staying.

It took us almost two and a half hours with the bus to reach the island.

We passed by all the Florida Keys, with one stop at the Islamorada for coffee and breakfast.

No Regrets

What is Avery Island famous for….???   well Tabasco Pepper sauce of course. (They call it Pepper sauce, not hot sauce). You can tour the factory, learn how the sauce is made and visit the Country Store that sells everything Tabasco, including Tabasco Chocolate, Tabasco Ice Cream, Tabasco Coca-Cola, and every type of sauce, dip, bbq sauce, jelly and candies that they make. But what we were really looking forward to (remember we are still in the middle of Cajun Country) was a food tour that is put on by Tabasco. The reviews on Trip Advisor were outstanding.

Our first stop of the day (technically not on Avery Island, but in nearby New Iberia was the Acadian Cultural Center.
