70-years ago today…

Großadmiral Karl Dönitz has 95 U-boats at sea. The Battle of the Atlantic was not over.

In the South Atlantic:

U-170, a Type IXC U-boat, KptLt Günther Pfeffer commanding, on its 2nd war patrol, torpedoed and sunk the unescorted Brazilian steam merchant Campos (4,663 GRT) 5-miles south of Alcatrazes Island, Brazil. The crew of 57 and 6 passengers took to the ship’s lifeboats, tragically two of which were struck by the ship’s screw, throwing the occupants to the water. 10 crew members and 2 passengers were lost.

In the Black Sea:

U-23, a Type IIB U-boat, KptLt Rolf-Birger Wahlen commanding, on its 12th war patrol, torpedoed and sunk the Soviet motor merchant Tanais (372 GRT) anchored at Poti, Georgian SSR. The U-Boat was operating in the Black Sea with the 30th U-Boat Flotilla… having been transported overland to Konstanza, Rumania in 1942.

It is important to note that the Luftwaffe was the most politically favored branch of the entire German Wehrmacht in the first two years of WWII. They designed and painted unit insignia in enormous numbers that possibly reached 1,500 badges and emblems. In the early years of the war, the new Nazi Party introduced past German military events and heroes into the Luftwaffe names and badges. For some reason this proved very unpopular with Luftwaffe units who adopted the more common themes for aircraft use. Another very uncommon practice was the usage of the same Luftwaffe political art, emblems, and badges, on the conning tower of the German U-boats.

When Sidney Perkins left his house on Euclid Avenue in Ottawa South to go to work on the morning of 2 July 1940, he had no notion that he was about to become part of one of the most secretive and daring operations of the Second World War. An operation that, had it failed, would have meant Britain’s almost certain defeat. Perkins worked for the Foreign Exchange Control Board which had been set up by the Bank of Canada at the outset of the war the previous year to husband Canada’s foreign currency resources. Shortly before noon, Perkins was summoned to the office of David Mansur, the Assistant Chairman of the Board and told that he was to make immediate arrangements to fly to Halifax and meet an important shipment. As an actress, Ida Lupino referred to herself as “a poor man’s Bette Davis,” and as a director, she called herself “the poor man’s Don Siegel,” but for me, she wasn’t the poor man’s anything.  For me, Ida personified the hard-boiled, scotch-drinking, tough-talking dame from the wrong side of the tracks.  In one of her films, she says, “I’ve seen and heard it all, buster.”  That’s Ida Lupino to me.

 Ida was born in London on February 4, 1918 – according to legend, she was born under a table during a zeppelin raid in the first World War.  She had a real show-business family.  Her father, Stanley, was a famous dance hall performer, her mother was once known as the fastest tap dancer alive, her paternal great-grandfather was an acrobatic ballet dancer and singer, and her great-uncles were stage headlin­ers.

Shrine of Dreams

On August 9, 1945 Lt. Robert Hampton Gray led two flights of Corsairs on one of the last operations of World War II. The first atomic bomb had been dropped on Hiroshima two days before. Senior officers had been informed that a second bomb would be dropped on the 9th. Admiral Vian, commanding Royal Naval forces attacking Japan, ordered that his pilots were to take no unnecessary risks — they would only take one run at a target, for instance. Gray’s planes were set to attack an airfield near Matsushima but, at the last minute, Gray was informed that the field had been intensively bombed and was probably unusable. If so, Gray was to seek out secondary targets such as ships.

Four North American Mustang Mark IIIs (FB113 ‘QV-H’ nearest) of No. 19 Squadron Royal Air Force based at Ford, Sussex, flying in starboard echelon formation. The aircraft have been painted with white identity markings on the nose and wings to prevent mis-identification as Messerschmitt Bf 109s.

The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II. The Mustang was conceived, designed and built by North American Aviation (NAA) in response to a specification issued directly to NAA by the British Purchasing Commission.

The Mustang was originally designed to use the Allison V-1710 engine. It was first flown operationally by the Royal Air Force as a tactical-reconnaissance aircraft and fighter-bomber (Mustang Mk I). The addition of the Rolls-Royce Merlin to the P-51B/C model transformed the Mustang’s performance at altitudes above 15,000 ft…

— A lot of public attention is paid to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service spy agency (CSIS) and the Communications Security Establishment (CSE), Canada’s electronic spy agency, but not many people realize the Canadian military maintains a large defence intelligence system. Last year, it produced more than 5,000 reports, which it shared not only with the top brass but with government departments. The branch also spent $202.4 million in hopes of providing “credible, timely, and integrated analysis of defence intelligence issues.”..
