In another departure from regular Land Domain content, this article considers a naval topic that has aroused much recent interest both within and beyond the UK Defence Community: the need for light frigates and corvettes to compensate for a reduced total number of warships. As the UK Ministry of Defence prepares to review bids for its Type 31 frigate requirement, it may be helpful to consider UK requirements in this area by looking back on similar ships produced between 1939 and 1945.

The attack on Pearl Harbor lasted just two hours, but the loss of life, supplies, and ships was staggering. When the smoke cleared, thirteen ships were in various stages of damage and seven ships, as well as a floating dry dock, were sinking or already sunk. Worse still, the attack had killed over 2,000 military personnel, including Navy, Army, and Marines. The human loss could never be repaired, but for a nation entering war, repair and reuse of the ships and materials was paramount. The question was, how?

A beautiful pastel sunset on Mustang Island near Port Aransas, Texas. This fine art print is available for home or office.

Port Aransas is a close and convenient beachy vacation spot for many Texas families, including mine. It may not be Hawaii or Destin, but it does have it’s own charm. As soon as we park the Odyssey and camper on the Ferry to cross to the Island, blood pressure drops, wrinkles relax, and “Island” time starts. You often see porpoise from the ferry.

This year, we have seen zero sea weed on shore anywhere. However, tar balls at low tide will require spending 30 minutes with baby oil and a scrubby to clean your feet off!

In Buffalo, we are fortunate to have a great radio station (106.5 WYRK) that offers a variety of shows throughout the year at various venues around town. Last night I attended their Spring Acoustic show featuring Dan + Shay, Chase Bryant and Michael Ray; held at the UB Performing Arts Center. For those of you that follow us from out of town; this venue has incredible acoustics and seats about 1,700 people, which means there is not a bad seat in the house!  The show was one of the most enjoyable shows I’ve been to in a long time, largely in part to the group dynamics of the artists on stage. Rise of the Asian Male

You’ve probably heard of the legendary military units comprised entirely of ethnic minorities like the Buffalo Soldiers, the Tuskegee Airmen and the Navajo Code Talkers.

But did you know that the most decorated unit of its size and length of service in US military history was an all Asian American one?

It was the 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry, and their story is truly remarkable.

In 1942, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japanese Imperial forces, the United States was very clear on its stance toward Japanese Americans: treat them as potential enemies, round them up, and lock them behind fences and barbed wire. But the government wasn’t quite sure what to do with the 1000+ Nisei (second generation) Japanese already serving in the US military. The Wandering Nyssa

This weekend I got to play the tourist in my own country. Dave’s parents came over from England for a visit so we took them out to Niagara Falls for a day of world famous sightseeing.

Impossible to take a bad selfie with that backdrop!

The weather was perfectly gorgeous and clear with the sun shining down illuminating all the summer colours of the area.

As always, the Canadian side didn’t let us down.

Neither Victory in Europe Day nor Victory over Japan Day took place on November 11th. Today’s date belongs to the anniversary of the end of World War I. By the time World War II ended, Armistice Day had been observed by Canada since 1919. It was formally renamed “Remembrance Day” and placed on November 11th back in 1931. For Remembrance Day in 1945, Canadians had much to be grateful for as not one but two chapters of war had come to a close earlier that year.
