Not Your Average American

A view of Arlington National Cemetery from the Air Force Memorial.
As we are all preparing to enjoy the upcoming three day weekend, I want to gently remind you that Memorial Day did not begin as a time to celebrate the first days of summer. The origins of the day came after the Civil War. Families of deceased soldiers came together on Decoration Day to honor their loved ones. Today, you too can honor our men and women who sacrificed for our Nation because no matter what you believe about a particular war, its rightness or its wrongness, I hope you agree that the soldiers who died are worthy of our remembrance and our respect.

Although it is possible to visit many different National Cemeteries in the United States, and even a few not within our borders, it isn’t always easy. I assembled this slideshow of Arlington National Cemetery…

Battleships: Big Boats and Big Guns for Big boys

Yamato1945 Line drawing of Yamato as she appeared in 1944–1945 (specific configuration from 7 April 1945)

The IJN Yamato was undoubtedly the most powerful battleship in the world during her short reign of the Pacific in World War 2.

As the KMS Bismarck was to the Atlantic Theater so too was the IJN Yamato to the Pacific Theater. Undoubtedly the most powerful battleship ever built, the Yamato was a mammoth ship design bristling with cannon and machine gun power backed up by armor that reached close to 20 inches in spots. The Yamato was to own the Pacific Theater and might have done so had the aircraft carrier not solidified its presence in the conflict as the new king of the seas.

With international treaties limited new warship construction to a reasonable 35,000 tons, the Imperial Japanese Navy set about to construct the massive 65,000+ ton Yamato and her sister ship…

Son of Clarence and Hilda Tomlinson of Wednesfield.

HMS. President III was not actually a ship it was the ship-name given to the establishment located at Dedworth Manor and which was administered under strict naval discipline. This establishment was responsible for the pay, accounts and administration of the D.E.M.S. (Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships) personnel, worldwide, and was directly responsible to D.N.A. (The Director of Navy Accounts) at Admiralty.

Although he was in the Royal Navy, and on the complement of HMS President III, he was, along with thousands of other sailors, assigned to a merchant ship, in his case the S.S. Oriskany.

The ship was on a voyage from Newport South Wales to London when she was torpedoed and sunk by U 480 on the 24th February 1945 just 4 miles off Penzance.

BRAVO ZULU and GOOD LUCK ON THE RESEARCH CONCERNING H.M.S. HOOD; THE PRIDE, OR ONE OF THEM, OF THE W.W.II/1939-1945 ROYAL NAVY.

Site Title

HMS Hood was the pride of the Royal Navy. HMS Hood was a massively armed battlecruiser with what was thought to be armour equal to her armaments. To all intents, HMS Hood was considered to be one of the most powerful battlecruisers afloat in World War Two.

However, the Hood suffered from one major flaw – she did not have the same amount of armour as the Bismarck. The fact that the Hood was faster than the Bismarck by 3 knots was as a result of her lack of sufficient armour for a naval battle fought in World War Two. What had been considered sufficient armour in 1918 when Hood was built, was to prove a fatal flaw in 1941.

On May 24th, 1941, the Royal Navy tailed the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen when they  attempted to break out into the Atlantic. If both of these ships had…

HMCS Haida is the last surviving Tribal class destroyer and a National Historic Site. The Tribals were fast, powerful destroyers, designed to engage the newest designs from other powers; they saw distinguished service with the British, Australian, and Canadian navies during World War II, and beyond, with Haida not being retired from service until 1963.

The Tribal class were amongst the most up-to-date, and powerful ships of their type available to the British and Commonwealth navies, and consequently saw much service across multiple theatres of the war – many were lost in action (12 out of 16 UK Tribals were destroyed, and one Canadian), and the British ones that survived the war were all too worn out to be of further use, being scrapped as a result.

Haida, and the other surviving Commonwealth Tribals that survived the war were updated, and saw significant post-war service, including most notably in the…

Lest We Forget

Sorry for posting so many articles on this blog this last week.

People have shared so much and are still sharing.

I really intended to close the book on the story of HMCS Athabaskan.

Hmcs_athabaskan_g07

But can you really close the book on the Athabaskan which sank on April 29, 1944, off the coast of France?

Relatives of sailors of HMCS Athabaskan still fight as one, and this blog honours them.

We fight as oneWe Fight as One

The badge design was created by officers of the first Athabaskan, and has been kept to honour the entire crew after their ship was lost to enemy action. The badge commemorates their sacrifice and expresses the ideal of courage and devotion to duty.

Weather was going to pack it in for a few days, so rather than hang around we abandoned New Orleans. About the only thing left on the list was to have caught the St Charles street car ($3 day pass).  So we headed West on HW90 across a massive raised highway over the swamp.
