Song of the Day

With a lyric that references: secret meetings, killing, open season, and a final solution; and with a title: Lunatic Fringe – the Song of the Day (SOTD) is no ordinary pop song. In fact people told the songwriter, Tom Cochrane to “lighten up.” Something inside of him told him to keep going. The things he had read (Wallenberg’s account of freeing Hungarian Jews) and the resurgence of anti-Semitism in the 70’s urged him to follow the path.

While working on the demo for the song, Cochrane found out about John Lennon’s death. He has spoken about how this pushed him, “It just hit me like a ton of bricks and I thought, here’s a guy that always wore his heart on his sleeve. For better, for worse, these lyrics are going to stand.”
