I found dodging the torpedoes quite interesting and entertaining until in the end they started to come from all directions and they were too much for me’ Captain Tennant (Brooke 1982 p113)
The attack and subsequent five torpedo strikes had taken less than five minutes. As Captain Tennant gave the order to abandon ship, the old battlecruiser was still moving at about 5-6 knots, although her portside list was rapidly increasing towards thirty degrees. The crew did not panic, remaining at their action stations until the word was given, and one, eighteen year old Australian Ian Davies, personified the expression ‘sticking to your guns’ as he still manned his post despite orders to abandon ship, firing his 20mm Ooerlikon even as the water was lapping at his feet and cursing at anyone who got in the way of his gun-sights. He was to go down with the Repulse.
